New downtown Ben & Jerry’s franchised to nonprofit organization

A Houston nonprofit organization will open the newest Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop in downtown’s Rice Lofts next month.
HoustonWorks USA is scheduled to open Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShop on July 19. The store will provide jobs to young people who may face barriers to employment. Ben & Jerry’s waives its franchise fees for its not-for-profit partners and provides extra support to insure a PartnerShop’s success.
HoustonWorks USA will build the shop at 909 Texas Ave., buy the equipment and product, and provide salaries for the supervisory staff and youth trainees. The organization anticipates training 30 people in the store’s first year of business.
T.W. Hudson, executive director of HoustonWorks, says the organization serves more than 250,000 people annually with job placement, continuing education and vocational training.
