Home Helpers franchise provides a helping hand

For Ann O’Brien, getting back and forth to her doctors can be impossible.
With some of her specialists in Philadelphia, she didn’t want to burden her relatives and neighbors to take her there, so she calls on Home Helpers.
Coming to the area only one year ago, Home Helpers is a national franchise that aids people in need in the tri-county area.
“When you have to go get procedures done and you can’t drive yourself, they provide not only the transportation, but stay with you and do whatever you ask,” said O’Brien, a retiree.
Donna Gordon began the first Home Helpers in South Jersey a year ago offering around-the-clock transportation, companion care, housekeeping and errand services for those who need help with these daily tasks. Gordon charges by the hour — $16.75/hour for companion care (transportation, housekeeping, making meals) and $20.75 for personal care by a certified home health aide who can assist dressing and showering.
“I feel like I’m giving something back to the community,” said Gordon, 37. “This can help seniors stay in their home and maintain their well-being.”
A stay-at-home mother for 11 years, Gordon decided she wanted to do something to help people after watching her mother-in-law and family care for her father-in-law, and how hard situations like that can be on the caregiver.
“Just going to a movie is a big deal for a caregiver,” said Gordon, from Delran. “Everyone forgets about the caregiver.”
Katherine Craig, who lives with her son’s family in Riverside, said even though she no longer drives, she still needs to get to the doctor and the grocery store. Since her son and daughter-in-law work, she calls on Home Helpers.
