Franchising: Norwich couple lead the way

Norfolk businesses are playing a key role in this year’s National Franchise Week, as the county continues to lead the way in franchising.
Norwich has been described as the franchising capital of the country, with Signs Express and Tax Assist among the well-known companies who have expanded across the country in this way.
And central to this is Norwich-based Franchise Development Services (FDS), which is at the forefront of national and international franchise development. This week the company is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and since it was founded in 1981 it has helped more than 500 owners of successful businesses expand by franchising, and helped more than 10,000 people to own and operate a franchise.
Also in Birmingham for the National Franchise Exhibition will be Norwich law firm Leathes Prior, one of the country’s leading specialist franchise law firms. Leathes Prior making its 20th appearance at the annual exhibition and is helping to present a programme of seminars there.
Roy Seaman, managing director of FDS, said: “Over this time we have seen many changes and this is dramatically supported in a recent survey commissioned by the British Franchise Association saying that franchises run solely by women are now more likely to describe themselves as highly profitable, compared with those run by males.“Franchising a business is open to all, despite what age or sex you are. There is no ageism in this industry and opportunities are certainly there to be snapped up. As long as you have the right support and guidance, people can be very successful. The average age of the new franchisee is also increasing year by year.”
FDS is just one of the local businesses heading to the National Franchise Exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham on Friday and Saturday.
