Max Muscle wants Colo. locations

California’s Max Muscle chain of sports nutrition stores plans to enter the Denver market.
Max Muscle expects to have 20 to 30 Denver-area locations by the end of 2010. Entering the local market is part of a nationwide expansion that calls for opening 500 new franchises in the next five years.
The chain is looking for a regional director for metro Denver, who would develop the area and encourage franchise sales. Max Muscle franchises sell for $150,000 to $200,000 for a single-unit owner, and $100,000 to $1.5 million for area-development agreements.
“We’re the only sports nutrition company in the marketplace to offer franchises and territories,” Marc Kiekenapp, Max Muscle’s senior vice president of franchise development, said in a statement.
Max Muscle’s main competitor is GNC Nutrition Centers, which has roughly 50 Denver-area stores. Pittsburgh-based GNC has some 90 locations statewide.
Based in Anaheim, Calif., Max Muscle was started in 1991. It makes sports nutritional supplements for losing weight, building muscle and overall health as well as fitness clothing. The company also publishes its own monthly magazine, Max Sports and Fitness, and runs the MaxFormation fitness contest.
