Men-only gyms promise quick, distraction-free workouts
One of the latest fads in the health club industry may be facing a tough sell in Silicon Valley.
Men-only fitness gyms – hoping to capitalize on the success of Curves, which caters exclusively to women – have been popping up across the country with mixed success. But they’ve gained little traction locally.
Cuts Fitness for Men closed its Half Moon Bay location a month ago. Blitz, another national chain of all-male gyms, shut down its Campbell location last year.
Perhaps their lack of local staying power is not too surprising.
Sure, Silicon Valley is brimming with the types of members these quick-fitness gyms target. There are lots of men here who spend hours on end working, so there’s little time left for cycling, running and weightlifting.
But given the engineering-oriented valley’s gender imbalance – which is especially pronounced in the workplace – single men looking for single women seem less than eager to further isolate themselves from the opposite sex in their snippets of free time.
Victor Cousins, a 30-year-old human resources manager at Sun Microsystems, exercises at a traditional gym. Would he opt for an all-male fitness facility instead?
“Not with much excitement or motivation,” conceded Cousins.
Still, owners of all-male gyms – who tout the convenience of super-short workouts in a no-frills environment – are eyeing the flabby arms to tone and the money to be made in Silicon Valley.
