The iconic red bat-wing doors of one of New Zealand’s largest restaurant chains have swung closed in the Waikato
Cobb & Co franchisees Paul and Anne-Marie Kyle, who have operated the Waikato’s only remaining Cobb and Co restaurant at Chartwell, Hamilton, for nearly two years, had the batwing doors removed from their restaurant – which opened in 1996 – on Tuesday.
They have prematurely pulled out of a 10-year agreement with brand owners Jim and Karen Boult and Roger Pierce.
Mr Kyle, who previously ran a McDonald’s restaurant in Masterton for six years, is now managing ChartHouse Restaurant and Bar – a business owned by Hamilton-based Stuart Robinson – in the building rented from a Bay of Plenty-based Maori trust.
The Kyles cited operational differences as the main reason for pulling out of Cobb & Co.
Mr Kyle, who is a former BNZ bank manager, said Cobb & Co had underspent on its advertising budget and was under-resourced when it came to supporting franchisees.
“When was the last time you saw a Cobb & Co advert on television?” he asked.
