Visit from Brazil Triggered Dramatic Career Change
Anderson Romanhuki left his native Brazil for what he thought would be a short visit to the U.S. At 28, he was 10 years into a career as a computer technician and interested in taking advanced computer classes at one of Boston’s highly regarded technology schools, but first he signed up for English classes at a local school for international students.
There he met a fellow Brazilian who owned a Coverall Cleaning Concepts franchise, and the friendship prompted him to rethink his career path.
For the first few years after he arrived in Boston, Romanhuki remained committed to the computer profession. He began teaching Web and graphic design courses at The Approach International Student Center where he was studying English. Later they added English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to his duties.
Romanhuki also set up his own computer business on the side to generate extra income, still thinking he would use the money to improve his computer credentials.
But the stories Romanhuki heard from his friend about owning a janitorial services franchise intrigued him, and in 2000 he decided to test the waters. That year, he purchased an entry-level Coverall Cleaning Concepts franchise package with money he had saved from his teaching and computer jobs.
By day, he continued teaching computer and ESL classes and doing freelance computer jobs. By night, he worked on his commercial cleaning business, gradually expanding his staff and customer base.
The work suited him, and in 2005 he decided to quit his teaching job and focus on Coverall Cleaning Concepts full-time. Today he has nine employees and a variety of accounts, notably seven medical labs and three office buildings affiliated with Quest Diagnostics, the nation’s leading provider of medical diagnostic testing, information and services.
