Chain goes full circle
After its locations in the area dwindled to just a handful, Dunkin’ Donuts is preparing to return in big numbers
Dunkin’ Donuts — the East Coast purveyor of coffee and pastries — is returning to Houston in a big way.
About 175 of the pink and orange stores ultimately will dot the local landscape. Currently, there are only three in town — down from a high of 20 locations in the ’80s — according to the company.
The latest growth spurt is part of an aggressive plan for Texas that calls for 175 new Dunkin’ Donuts in Houston, 125 new stores in Dallas and 63 in Austin.
“I’ve found New York pizza equivalents, but I’ve never been able to find the doughnuts,” said Inez Moriarty, a Bronx native who moved to Katy seven years ago. “I feel like a piece of home is coming to Houston.”
Ultimately, Dunkin’ Donuts hopes to have 15,000 stores in the U.S. by 2020. There are 5,300 Dunkin’ Donuts in America and more than 1,900 elsewhere.
