Fifty franchises stand as glowing examples
There are quite a large number of small retailers who have documentation and aspirations for expansion by franchising but most have found it difficult to either secure suitable retail sites or, more frequently, competent franchisees.
The flush of early retirees and voluntary redundancies in the economy has washed through and the experience gaps across many industries are providing more flexible and satisfying alternatives for executives to running their own businesses, especially time demanding retail businesses.
Inside Retailing Magazine was taken to task last year for commentary that noted retail franchising was showing little growth and was under pressure from margins squeezed by higher rents and wages.
The critic was a franchise consultant, but a quick look at his own client list showed most of his franchise opportunities were in service businesses rather than retail.Interestingly, there has also been an upsurge in disputation and franchisee concerns in a number of leading franchise chains, including several franchise of the year winners like 7-Eleven and Bakers Delight.
