The Knotty Dog, one of the area’s newest fast-food restaurants, offers hot dogs and pretzels with a twist.

The concept is part of Tom Rodenkirch’s plan to help disabled military veterans by offering them an avenue to their own Knotty Dog franchise.

Rodenkirch, 65, of Cleves, who retired in 2005 after nearly 50 years in the fast-food business, was inspired by retired Gen. Colin Powell, who during a Memorial Day special on PBS last year said the plight of disabled vets required more than bumper stickers.

“They are American heroes and deserve our support, encouragement and respect,” said Rodenkirch, who is not a veteran. “They deserve an opportunity to earn a living for their families.”

Rodenkirch, who has managed and owned a variety of restaurants, including Wendy’s and McDonald’s franchises, wanted a simple concept that a disabled vet could operate with a minimum of investment and training.
