BusinessWorld Online:

Franchisers remain upbeat for 2009 as they eye new markets and good locations provided by the growing number of malls and office sites outside Metro Manila.

Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI) president Rommel T. Juan noted increasing franchise activity in the Visayas and Mindanao as Metro Manila becomes saturated.

He expects a 28% increase in total sales of his groups’ members next year.

“We have to look for new markets. One can capture more sales in virgin markets,” Mr. Juan said in Filipino in a telephone interview last week.

Entrepreneurs from urban centers like Cebu and Iloilo are becoming more interested in franchising opportunities, Armando O. Bartolome, president of GMB Franchise Developers, Inc. and AFFI’s consultant, said in an interview. “I’m also happy to note that [entrepreneurs in the] Visayas and Mindanao are [looking at] getting a franchise. It’s [becoming] very aggressive,” Mr. Bartolome said.

The increase in regional operations are becoming possible partly due to the attractive commercial spaces offered by malls and call center sites rising outside the capital, Philippine Franchise Association Executive Director Chit S. Estrada said in a telephone interview.

Provincial suppliers of materials and services are also able to meet the standards of the franchisers, she noted.
