New-Business Effort Takes Step Forward
Franchise plan aims to create jobs and retain local dollars.

North Tulsa residents now have a greater opportunity to spur economic development on their side of town.
City and community leaders celebrated a new program Wednesday that will help entrepreneurs create businesses. North Tulsa residents can apply to launch one of 10 franchises with the help of Forward, or Franchising Opportunities Reinforced With Assistance Rewards.
The program provides coaching and aims to help entrepreneurs obtain loans. Organizers say they hope franchise businesses eventually open on the corner of Peoria Avenue and Reading Street.
The site, owned by Tulsa Development Authority, is the former home of the Banfield shopping center. City officials held a press conference Wednesday on the empty field.
“This is a beautiful area,” Mayor Kathy Taylor said. “We just need to get the word out.”
The program’s announcement excited crowd members.
“Woo!” City Councilor Jack Henderson yelled into a microphone as he pumped his fist into the air.
“When you get excited, you’re supposed to show it,” he said, prompting those in the crowd to laugh and applaud.
The 10 franchises are expected to create roughly 50 jobs and 10 internships, said Rose Washington Rentie, executive director of the Tulsa Economic Development Corp., which helped create the program.
