The Lollipop Shop Brings Candy To Downtown Beaufort

Upon entering the Lollipop Shop in downtown Beaufort, you’re instantly greeted by a Willy Wonka-like cornucopia of sweet, sugary smells from candies past and present and striking contrasts of vibrant colors ranging from bright reds and yellows to pastel greens and pinks.

Taking a moment to step away from behind the cash register, store owner Glenn Jacobus grabbed a handful of caramel-colored candies from one of the many goodie-filled baskets along the wall.

“See these Squirrel Nut Zippers,” Jacobus said. “That’s old time for people in the South.”

For the unfamiliar, Squirrel Nut Zippers are a nut and caramel candy similar to the more popular Mary Jane’s and Bit-O-Honey’s, both of which the Lollipop Shop also carries. Additionally, the store sells chocolate gold coins, rock candy, Pennsylvania Dutch Candies, Pop Rocks, Clark’s Teaberry gum, Glee gum, Big League Chew, Blenheim ginger ale and, of course, several kinds of lollipops.

The store opened in December and is located across from Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, right next to the Common Ground coffee house.

“We’ve done pretty well since we opened,” Jacobus said. “If you come on the weekends, it’ll be jam packed. We also do a lot of kids’ birthday parties. “That’s been a big niche for us because of our location with the playground around the corner. We give them cupcakes that they decorate, and we have a clown that comes and entertains the kids, and then they go around the corner to the playground. It’s a great birthday party.”

The Lollipop Shop also offers toys, including vintage pedal cars that the store will ship anywhere in the United States for free, Tiddlyinks, yellow rubber duckies, a variety of wind-up toys and Stuff-A-Buddy, where children can stuff their own animal at the store’s stuffing tree.
