Looking For Work? Consider Franchising

State unemployment in January hit its highest point in a quarter of century.
The jobless rate rose to 11.6 percent, and is expected to continue to climb.
For those who are out of a job because of downsizing, early retirements and buyouts, and are looking for work, Mary Washington has a suggestion.
Check out franchising.
“Franchising is building local businesses, one opportunity at a time,” Washington said. The Michigan Franchise Opportunities Seminar, “How to Be in Business For Yourself, But Not By Yourself,” takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Saginaw Valley State University’s Curtiss Hall.
“The audience for this are people who are interested in franchising and never had the information on how to do it,” said Washington, community affairs specialist for U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, a Detroit Democrat.
“When you get connected to people who have already done it, franchising is easy,” said Washington, who works out of Levin’s Saginaw office. “You can get help from the International Franchise Association, the map is already there for you to follow.”
The Washington D.C.-based association is hosting the event, in partnership with Levin and a number of other Great Lakes Bay Region business and economic development groups, Washington said.
They are SVSU, Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center at Delta College, Saginaw African American & Minority Business Association and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Read more.
