Mr Rental Takes Off In Appliance Biz

Stepping back and letting go of the reins by installing a general manager to take the business forward is a leap of faith.
For Mr Rental, a Brisbane-based international appliance rental company, this step set the business on a path to three extremely successful years.
Founders Glen and Kerrianne Hickman realised franchising expertise would be required to develop their business vision faster.
“We acknowledged early on that we didn’t have franchising expertise and knew it might take us 10 years to learn how to be a good franchise system,” Mr Hickman says.
“As a result we made the decision to employ someone whose knowledge and experience would ensure implementation of franchising best practice was immediate.”
Mr Rental started franchising in 2001 and three years later appointed general manager Alan Payne.
“We’ve experienced a very tight market in recent years in terms of franchisee recruitment so our strategy was to focus on consolidation and building a solid foundation of core competencies in the areas of marketing, operations, product, information technology, human resources and communications,” Mr Payne says.
