Green Franchising And The General Store

The old general store, which went the way of the buggy with the arrival of department stores, appears to be making a comeback – only this time the horse hitch might well be replaced with an electric vehicle charging station.
Positioning themselves as alternatives to cookie-cutter, globally-branded chain stores, a number of locally-owned general stores selling sustainable products have cropped up in cities like Cincinnati, St. Louis, Nashville and Los Angeles over the last two years.
Now, a Portland-based start-up company is hoping to take the local model to a global scale by creating the world’s first chain of “green” general stores that remain locally-owned and managed.
It’s the “un-chain,” said John Friess, an entrepreneur and co-founder of Seven Planet. Mr. Freiss said that where chains like Starbucks or Subway, for example, sell the same products at every store, no two Seven Planet stores are alike. Read more.
