Schuler’s Bakery: The Legend Comes To London
Thelma Sanders, of London, said it best on Monday afternoon.
“We used to go over to Springfield,” she said, as she and her friends made their way to the door of the new Schuler’s Bakery at 289 Lafayette St., holding boxes of baked goods they had just purchased from the legendary operation that had opened its London store at 6 a.m. that morning.
Just ahead of them, a smiling and apparently satisfied couple, clutching bags filled with their Schuler’s favorites, said, “We heard it opened.”
No longer will Madison County residents have to make the trek to Springfield. Schuler’s, which opened on Main Street in Springfield 74 years ago, has arrived in London at The Crown Plaza.
“It’s been a great response,” said Mike Peters, Schuler’s vice president of marketing, of the first day.
He was taking a breather behind one of the large confectionery counters along the left side of the store.
