Small Businesses Advised To Be Prepared For Flu Outbreak

With swine flu and the regular flu hitting hard already, government officials say small businesses must be prepared if they lose a large number of their employees to illness.
Phillip Pitts, owner and manager of Parris Jewelers, said four of his seven employees have been struck by the swine flu, including Pitts himself, who was out last week recuperating.
“It’s called teamwork at this point,” Pitts said. “Everyone pulled together and continued to do their job.”
Retail stores and restaurants who draw large crowds could be hit the hardest by any illness. Small businesses with 10 or fewer workers could be hurt if several of them caught the flu.
“We all work as a family and would handle it as any other illness,” said Emily Shows, store manager of Fragrances Galore. “Because we are in a retail setting, we may give extra thought, go the extra mile while cleaning the store and use antibacterial products on things like debit card PIN pads.”
