Planet Fitness Approach Delivers World Of Opportunity

For the second straight year, Planet Fitness, the health club franchiser based in Newington, has made the Inc. 500, the entrepreneurial magazine’s list of America’s fastest growing private companies.
From 2005 to 2008, annual revenue jumped 551 percent, from $15.2 million to $99.4 million, moving Planet Fitness up to 471st on the prestigious list. The company placed 732nd on the Inc. 5000 a year ago.
“It indicates we’ve truly developed a game-changing business model in the fitness industry,” said Planet Fitness CEO Michael Grondahl. “We’ve had our naysayers, but we’ve arrived. It’s a bit surreal.”
Planet Fitness had just four locations, all in New Hampshire, when it began franchising in 2003. It now has 280 locations in 32 states, including 11 in New Hampshire with the number set to rise to 12 when the new Stratham location opens by year’s end. That club will join others in the area including Portsmouth, Dover, Rochester and Raymond. Planet Fitness also has 11 franchises in Maine, with the closest to Portsmouth being in Sanford.
In addition to the Inc. 500, Planet Fitness made the September cover of Business New Hampshire Magazine as the state’s fastest growing private company.
