First Watch, the Bradenton, Florida-based Breakfast, Brunch and Lunch chain, has signed a multi-unit franchise agreement with Dabbour Enterprises, LLC for Oklahoma City. The company has agreed to open three First Watch restaurants in the market over the coming years with the first location expected to open this summer.

Dabbour Enterprises President Ghassan Dabbour has more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry most recently as a multi-unit franchise operator for IHOP. After having a great dining experience at a First Watch restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri back in Spring 2009, Dabbour decided that he wanted to invest in the First Watch concept. He also chose to sell his interest in five IHOP franchise locations.

“First Watch has set a high standard not seen in any other breakfast and lunch establishment and to me represents the future of the segment. I knew immediately that I wanted to be a part of its growth and success,” said Dabbour. “First Watch’s proven success over 26 years, its impressive management team, award-winning menu and customer-focused service philosophy will be a welcomed addition to Oklahoma City and my family and I look forward to welcoming guests to the restaurants.”

The Four Fountains Spa (TFFS) is eyeing the franchisee model to expand its base in Mumbai. The company is a chain of affordable spas and has plans to launch four spas by the end of the year. TFFS has an existing chain of four day spas and one hotel spa in Pune. It has further plans to expand its footprint in Mumbai, Goa, Lonavala, Aurangabad and Manali.

The average size of each spa outlet would be around 1,000 sq.ft and will be launched at Bandra, Malad, Goregaon and Powai region in Mumbai. While the existing spas in Pune are a mix of company owned and franchisee owned spas; for its expansion in Mumbai, it plans to set up all four spas through the franchisee route. While commenting on the franchisee model of business, Sunil Rao, director marketing, TFFS says,“The franchisee owners would be like mini venture-capitalists for us who only need to make the initial investment and rest will be taken care by us. We will guarantee them an assured return every month and any additional revenue shall depend on returns from the individual outlet.”

Perth-based Cash Converters International has bought the Balcatta franchise for $1.2 million and opened two new stores in the United Kingdom.

The Balcatta store was purchased from an existing franchisee for a total price of $1.18 million, which included assets of $420,500.

The acquisition price represents an EBIT multiple of 3.09 times.

The acquisition of this store is anticipated to increase the company’s EBIT by approximately $ 381,575 in its first full year of ownership.

Large retailers are trying to make their small food and grocery stores viable by trying out new ideas. While some like Reliance Retail are converting most of these stores into a deep-discount value format, RPG Group’s Spencer’s is looking at the franchising route.

Anand Raghuraman, partner, The Boston Consulting Group, said it is extremely tough to make money on small food and grocery stores.

“It’s a crisis situation, and retailers are trying to find answers to some fundamental questions.” The problem is that retailers are straddled with a large base of small food & grocery stores — nearly 700 of them.

Reliance’s retail business reported an aggregate loss of Rs 557 crore (Rs 5.57 billion) on revenue of about Rs 4,000 crore (Rs 40 billion) for the year ended March 2009. Half of these losses came from the food and grocery chain, Reliance Fresh, which reported a net loss of Rs 249.30 crore (Rs 2.49 billion) on revenue of Rs 1,778.06 crore (Rs 17.78 billion); the rest came from other formats.

Retailers have been trying to figure out how they can make the small stores viable. Industry sources said that Reliance Retail is now looking at a heavy-discount format; the stores will offer very little service, no air-conditioning but prices will be much lower than kirana stores.

American frozen dessert maker Swensen’s plans to set up a chain of ice cream parlours in India to take on rivals such as Häagen-Dazs and Baskin Robbins.

The company will have factories in south India.

The San Francisco-based company, which is among the top five frozen dessert brands in North America, has tied up with a local partner and will open its first shop in Bangalore by mid-2010. The plan is to become an all-India chain with 80 outlets over the next two years.

“We are looking at various locations and speaking to potential partners to set up a manufacturing unit in the south that will back up our parlours,” Gary T. Moore, head of franchising of Minor Food Group, told The Telegraph.

Minor Food has a 40-year franchise licence for Swensen’s in 34 countries across West Asia and Asia.
The ice cream industry in India is worth Rs 2,000 crore, growing at an annual rate of 12 per cent. The branded frozen dessert market — part of the ice cream industry — is valued at Rs 800 crore at around 100 million litres per annum.
