Do not waste your time with this franchise. Many Pirtek locations have closed. Currently Pirtek Miramar is for sale, after 10 years of business it is for sale for the third time. Research the various and expensive lawsuits, get written information on how many different owners each location has had. Talk to every franchisee, ask why they don't buy the "franchise of the year" in Miramar, or why they auctioned off Ontario, Ca. Good businesses sale themselves and are valuable. Watch what the insiders do! A Pirtek has not been sold for a profit by any franchisee, most are sold for pennies on the dollar or close their doors, make sure you get the chain of ownership for any franchise location, especially Pirtek. Look carefully at the track record, evaluate the numbers, get everything in writing, interview all current franchisees, if they do not respond to your questions, or tell you they are too busy count that response as a big red flag. Use common sense, in more than 10 years of franchising Pirtek has managed to sell about 3 franchises per year! Pirtek is at or near the bottom of the franchise 500 list. According to various websites training takes two weeks. Ask how a new business in hydraulics gets technicians trained in two weeks? If Pirtek could grow faster they probably would, but the stores keep closing almost as fast as they sell them. I think Pirtek is a sucker play, research it very carefully. If you have questions about Pirtek please contact me I can direct you to past franchisees, and provide more detailed information. Thanks, Scott. fixxme@aol.com

One other important characteristic I'd like to add is the ability to market their franchised business. Many business owners simply think that working harder or relying on the trademarks or brand names of the franchise company will enable them to create a successful business. Often, the business owner has to be a standout in their area and actively promote the business.

Marketing doesn't have to be expensive either. Using free publicity principles, one can create lots of buzz for a new business. Taking the lead from Richard Branson who so expertly created publicity stunts that generated a huge amount of interest and news coverage, a business owner can create an innovative, news-worthy publicity stunt or marketing campaign that will help increase business and sales.

During an economic downturn, people with a tidy amount of savings will often be looking for opportunities to create a more secure future through owning their own business instead of working for someone else.

Given that many of these people are actually investing a large portion of their hard earned savings, it is surprising that more don't investigate the business they are interested in buying. It is understandable, however, that many are not very business savvy in the first place and thus have little idea how to get into the business they are interested in. Many overlook buying into a distressed business that could easily be turned around with some great marketing because they don't have the turnaround know-how.

Having been involved in franchising, I can certainly understand why these franchisees may be trying to exit their business. In many franchise agreements, the conditions usually benefit the franchisor and some statements may be vague and sound too general to be legally enforced when a franchisee encounters problems.

It is true that in an economic downturn, franchising becomes an attractive option for inexperienced entrepreneurs to get into a business, especially if they've got a tidy sum of money tucked away or don't want to invest it in the stock market for fear of loss. Franchises are not for everyone and the potential franchisee better investigate their options before putting a large chunk of their savings on a franchise business. In some cases, they might have been better off building one themselves if they had the knowledge.

Another important aspect to consider in these contracts is the level of support provided by the franchisor. Make sure details are spelled out as much as possible and not left to interpretation. For example, it is not uncommon for franchisors to specify contributions to a "marketing fund" that you have absolutely no influence or control over. They may use it on a national scale and the effect on your business will be minimal at best. So in actuality, you are building the franchisor's business!
