The first question that every prospective franchisee asks a franchisor is, “How much money can I make in this business?” Since the FTC passed the franchise compliance rules in 1979, the most common answer to this question has been, “We can’t tell you because the FTC won’t allow us to.” This statement is simply not true and never has been.
In the original 1979 FTC regulations governing the sale of franchises, the guidelines specifically allowed franchise companies to make what were called “earnings claims” as long as a specified set of rules was followed. In the revised FTC rules adopted in 2007, they again allowed for what they are now calling “financial performance representations” to be made by franchise companies under specified parameters. In fact, under the current rules, if a franchise company elects not to provide financial performance representations to a prospective franchisee, they must make a disclosure to the candidate stating that the FTC does permit them to do so in Item 19 of their Franchise Disclosure Document.

Bikinis Sports Bar and Grill will open its doors to the residents of Live Oak on Thursday, March 4, 2010. This location, a successor to five other Bikinis, has taken over a building, which previously housed an On The Border, near the intersection of Loop 1604 and Interstate 35.
“We’ve been very happy with the first Bikinis in San Antonio (located at 8224 Fredericksburg Road), so when we found this location, in Live Oak, we just couldn’t pass it up,” explains Doug Guller, the founder of Bikinis.
Bikinis takes pride in having some of the most attractive females in the area, but the view isn’t just the Bikinis Babes. An abundance of high-definition televisions, plenty of leg and elbow room, an extensive menu, and a great sound system also draw “fans” into Bikinis; not to mention the great food and drink specials.

Paul W. Eckert, President and CEO of Family Financial Centers, LLC, is pleased to introduce for the first time internal financing for qualified franchise candidates. A mere 25% down payment by the franchisee on the center build-out package is all that is required to furnish the center with furniture, fixtures and equipment. The remainder is paid out over the following 5 years.
In essence, the store will pay for itself. “In this new year”, states Mr. Eckert, “it is the individual small business owner that will be putting the economy back on track. Our internal financing will make it more affordable than ever for these entrepreneurs to get on their feet and on the road to independence and profitability.” For information on this program and other opportunities please contact Family Financial Centers at (215) 230-5508.

Working long hours as an office administrator, with a three-hour commute and a boss with a penchant for throwing things, Jane Croft figured there had to be more to life. One day last year she found it in a few tiny, oinking piglets that promised not to grow any bigger than a cocker spaniel. After a 10-year career in London’s financial district, Croft 43, is now one of the few people in the world who specialize in breeding a surprisingly popular modern-day house pet: the micro pig.
The smallest piglets are no bigger than a tea cup at birth and get to about a foot tall at the shoulder when fully grown at three years. Celebrities Paris Hilton and the Beckhams recently shelled out $2,000 for one, and the trend is picking up in London suburbs, where people like the novelty of living with a small farm animal. Micro pigs live to about 11 years, can be house trained and will snuggle up with their owners on the couch to watch TV. They’ll even let you scratch their bellies.
Her business, the Little Pig Farm in Cambridgeshire, England, operates with scant competition. She claims to be the U.K.’s only specialist micro-pig breeder and to sell the smallest pigs in Europe. The company was only incorporated a year ago but has already sold 200 tiny piglets for between $800 and $1,100 each. She currently has a backlog of 100 customers, each waiting six to 12 months to pick up their new piglets. Croft projects revenues will reach $300,000 in 2010 and could top $1.8 million in 2012. She plans to get there by starting the world’s first micro-pig franchise.

In these tough economic times, some experienced executives have been laid off, downsized or minimized, but still have plenty to offer. They might desire to look at franchises, which offer the opportunity to make a change, run a business and create jobs.
Contractors are looking at these opportunities, too. The franchise concept isn’t a new one. Wouldn’t you have loved to been an early owner of a prime location for McDonald’s, for instance, or any number of other franchise success stories? But as with any great opportunity, there are lots of pitfalls, misinformation and scams. Novices can get in trouble falling for the wrong story or investing with too little capital. Like any endeavor, there are plenty or challenges and risks.
Franchise industries offer opportunities with automobiles, education, food, children, health care, pets, computers and Internet, sports and recreation, veterans, women and Canadians.
There are two primary kinds of franchises – product distribution and business format.
Product distribution franchises sell products and are based on supplier-dealer relationships. These franchisors license their trademarks and logos to the franchisees but usually do not provide them with an entire system for running their business. These are often soft drink distributors, car dealers and gas stations.

The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act of 2009 could potentially help thousands of active duty service persons and members of the National Guard reduce the complexity of state income tax and personal property tax issues when married, stated Jackson Hewitt Tax Service®. The Company reminds military taxpayers of the Relief Act, along with other tax considerations for the men and women who serve our nation.
“The Military Spouses Residency Act passed into law last year, 2009, and is effective for this year’s tax filing season,” said Mark Steber, chief tax officer, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. “The Act was created to reduce the state and local tax burdens on military spouses who follow their partners from state to state. Thanks to this change in the law, military spouses may be eligible to claim the same domicile or resident state as their active-duty spouse with regard to state income taxes, local personal property taxes, and voting status.”

Late last year, Alisha Thompson was at a crossroad.
The cookie shop she’d been running for five years was changing, and she knew it would be tough — if not impossible — to keep going. Thompson could continue down the path and renew her expiring franchise agreement with Cookies by Design or reopen as a whole new business. It was a difficult proposition.
A third option, perhaps the easiest one, was shutting down and heading back to corporate America, where she’d been a successful human-resources executive.
She could have gotten a decent job with benefits and the time to pay off her debts. Considering she was three months pregnant at the time, no one would have blamed her for taking that road.
But Thompson decided on the most difficult path.
“I couldn’t imagine [going back] to a life where I punch a time clock and work at a desk. It’s not fulfilling. I can’t work in a status quo environment,” she said. More.
